Game recommendation of the week – LIMBO

Limbo is a puzzleplatform video game developed by independent studio Playdead. The game was released in July 2010 on Xbox Live Arcade, and has since been ported to several other systems, including the PlayStation 3Linux and Microsoft WindowsLimbo is a 2D side-scroller, incorporating a physics system that governs environmental objects and the player character. The player guides an unnamed boy through dangerous environments and traps as he searches for his sister. The developer built the game’s puzzles expecting the player to fail before finding the correct solution. Playdead called the style of play “trial and death”, and used gruesome imagery for the boy’s deaths to steer the player from unworkable solutions.

The game is played in a black and white environment and tone with different film effects and ambient sounds to create a haunting and eerie vibe. When we first played the video game we thought it was the most terrifying and hauntingly thrilling video game we have ever played.  The game has the ability to take the player through various emotional roller coasters. The game also has this weird and uncanny way of keeping you(the player) emotionally attached to the boy in the game. We have played a lot of violent, kill’em all kind of games before but we never actually gave a tiny rat’s a**(excuse the French) about the characters in the game. But when it came to the boy in Limbo, We were an emotional wreck.

You make one wrong move and the boy is being crushed under a huge rock, getting shredded by a chain meal, drowning in a pond full of dead bodies, falling off a cliff, getting eaten by a giant spider, being electrocuted, falling into a ditch full of spikes or being blown to pieces by a machine gun. Watching the boy die in these horrific ways, you can’t help but feel bad for the little dude.  There is also this overwhelming feeling of guilt that takes over you for causing the boy unimaginable pain and suffering. Its really inexplicable why you feel this way, but that is just part of the experience.

Limbo video game is a perfect example of how video game can be viewed as an art form. It truly is a master piece. How often is it that we get to say about a video game?

Playing this game, you will be horrified, mesmerized , relieved, frustrated, terrified, stunned and if you are anything like us, even dive into a deep depression. But you will absolutely LOVE IT!!
